School’s Founder and first Headteacher, Mrs Alny Graham (previously Ms.Younger), Mr Mark Becker, Headmaster; Keith Anderson, Chairman of the Board of Governors ; Rev. Liz O’Ryan, Holy Trinity Church; the current youngest and oldest children in the School, Saylor Teague and Rory Lyall.

Children and staff of The Compass School came together with invited guests in Holy Trinity Church, Haddington, today for a special Service of Thanksgiving to mark its sixtieth birthday.

The School, which began in 1963 in the Church Hall of Holy Trinity on Church Street, Haddington, has begun a year of celebration to mark this significant milestone in its history.

The service was led by Rev Liz O’Ryan, a regular visitor to The Compass and Rector iof Holy Trinity, Haddington). The Guest of Honour at the service was the School’s Founder and Headteacher for 28 years, Mrs Alny Graham (Younger) who spoke to the children about their memories of The Compass and how, like today, she wished those first children to shine!

Following the Service, the children, staff and guests made their way to the Church Hall where they all sang “Happy Birthday” and enjoyed a birthday cake, specially designed by Liggy’s Cake Co, which was cut by the oldest and youngest current pupils in the School, Rory Lyall and Saylor Teague.

The Headteacher, Mark Becher, said: “The Service was a truly memorable occasion. It was so special to be back at where it all began sixty years ago and to take time to reflect on the many successes which the School has enjoyed over that time. We were honoured to have our Founder, Mrs Graham with us to celebrate this auspicious moment in the School’s history. The birthday cake and refreshments which followed were much enjoyed by both children and grown-ups alike!’
